Comparing Can Be Brutal

Posted on Posted in Affiliate Marketing

Comparing can be brutal and MORE damaging to you than to anyone else and if you’re doing this – stop it.

I may be a tad abrupt with this, but I’ve BEEN there. It made me nuts! I was the only one hearing it between my ears. No one else noticed or said anything to me. I was telling myself:

Why is everyone else in Network Marketing doing better than me?

So let’s discuss this, and let’s get personal. Ready?

Network Marketing can be challenging and sweet. ย  Challenging because no one is going to do anything FOR you. Sweet because of the rewards, and there are MANY.

Let’s discuss the first one – Challenges, what are they?

First and probably the most difficult is this – being your own boss. Depending on your age, generations learn different cultural standards. For example, when I was growing up there was, for my parents anyway – job security. They went to college, got a good job and retired. This is what I was taught and so many others in my age range ( 50 + years-of-age and older).

So in many ways we were, are, used to working for someone else and having the “Boss” tell us what to do. It’s ย EASY to work for someone else. It’s challenging to work for ourselves.

I remember this was really difficult for me at first. Where do I begin? How do I organize my time? What do I work on first? How much time should I spend on x, y, z? What do I need to learn besides everything?

Robin Hood Mentoring

Then the distractions came and went and I spent most of my time goofing off with distractions and not getting anything done.

So, choices had to be made. Which was more important – watching TV or learning something about my Network Marketing business?

And sacrifices had to be made on how I spent my time. This was tough because it meant spending time away from my family.

Being self-resourceful is a skill that I had to develop. What is it? It’s being able to find things out on my own and not depend on my upline or sponsor for the information or answers…

So if you’re asking yourself why you’re not successful – yet. You CAN be, it just means you have to do things differently. Ask yourself”

  • How am I spending my time
  • Did I look for the answers first BEFORE asking for help
  • Am I learning everything I can on my own about this business (knowing your business WILL contribute to attracting prospects)

Another challenge in being the BOSS of your Network Marketing business is reaching out to others.ย Many people think screaming their opportunity is the way to go. I’m sure you’ve seen this on social media platforms – it’s a real turnoff. What attracts people to you is getting to know who YOU are.

Here’s the BEST news ever … there is NO ONE LIKE YOU ON THE PLANET EARTH!

So if you remember this very important fact, build on it. I believe there is an audience for everyone. You just need to cultivate who you are and share information about your business from an enthusiastic, passionate point of view AND be very interested in your potential prospect. You have to find out about them FIRST and LISTEN to what they say.

As you overcome these challenges you will grow confident in yourself and you’ll do less comparing. There’s no need to compare, ever it is so damaging and will keep you from being the very BEST you can be.

As far as the sweetness of Network Marketing, there are many good things about it. The list is long, for one – residual income is a biggy.

Let’s conquer the challenges first, once you do, the rewards will come easy.

Keep me posted.

Creatively yours,

Lesly Federici

  1. Hi Lesly,
you are right comparing is very damaging and not good at all.
It does stop the ambition and makes feel not good enough.
Especially if it looks all better for others ,which is often not true.
We live in a world of pretenders and sometimes it only looks like.
I had an experience, when I had a shop in Germany, at a meeting
all talking about good business. I said in my opinion, business this
month is not good, I am wondering. It was as if something unlogged
all of a sudden all had the same problem and all got more real.Everybody
has his own difficulties and comparing does not help. Being authentic
everybody will find the right people. You are right, we all are unique.
    Thank you

  2. Hi Lesly,
It’s really hard at the beginning to accept that you have to start with the very first step when everyone else seems to be so far ahead. But in reality, the only person you must compete with is the person that you were yesterday and just take one step at a time.
Greate post, thank you for sharing!

  3. Hi Robin,
I appreciate your honesty! LOL.. makes me smile because this is something every human being does. I would guess even you have compared yourself to something at times – it’s human nature. And boring can be interesting and rewarding. I appreciate the visit and your comment… thanks ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. Hi Emi,
Wonderful to see you visiting … yes, I think competing with yourself is good because it can make you better than you were the day before /// I like that ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. Great post, Lesly! Here is what I struggle with. I don’t compare. However, how do I benchmark my own progress? How should I set expectations for myself? That is the thing I find hard.

  6. Please people, don’t compare yourself to others.
You may be at a stage that others have gone thru already or you might be way ahead
of someone new to this business of marketing in whatever shape you choose.
Compete with you. Do better than you were doing. Learn more grow more and see just how far you have come. Remember how you started out. You are the only one like yourself. You are the original and how can you compare an original to anything else.

  7. Oh My what a post it is!!
    A very timely one!
As we all do this in some time of our life, no doubt everyone here and everywhere do this LOL

As the post said it is BRUTAL, SERIOUS AND DANGEROUS!!

Lesley you brought out this serious issue to ponder upon. good that this made me to think again, in fact, i am sure this is a wonderful subject to discuss with each other a good discussion thread! ๐Ÿ™‚ and to control ourselves to some extend!

Just now i received a fb notification from one of my online friend’s community page where she asked for your today’s favourite quote! Immediately I copied This post’s key statement or quote! “HEREโ€™S THE BEST NEWS EVER โ€ฆ THERE IS NO ONE LIKE YOU ON THE PLANET EARTH!” and said: “A Quote i just read at one of my on line friends Lesly’s post. Yes, she wrote on a subject of comparison with each others. Its a bad thing to do! If we believe in this quote we never repeat that comparison business” Yes, I repeat! If we really think about ourselves this way, I am sure there is no need to compare anyone on this earth with us!

  8. Brilliant, Lesly, I love your quote ‘there is no one on the planet earth like you’ – isn’t that a fact! I think if we all recognise our uniqueness we might stop comparing as there really is no comparison, but it is difficult and marketing is a harsh wordl where we always ‘see’ someone else doing so much better than we are!

    Enjoy the journey!

  9. HI Lesly,

What a great article. I too agree that there is an audience for everyone. For many of us, we find too many audiences and that then gets us in a trap as far as moving to the next level of product services and development. That’s my opinion anyway. Plus, when my audience was blended with 3-4 different types (self-growth, professional development, promoting good will and blogging for business) I was spinning my wheels trying to keep up with which audience I should be writing for.

I now am narrowing that niche down and so thankful I am . It’s so much easier and I’m able to feel as if I am accomplishing what my original goals were. Thanks for sharing about being true to yourself and your true audience. Great read.

    Have a great upcoming week.

  13. You’ve laid out some important lessons here, Lesly.

Most importantly, we need to walk in our own path, develop our own unique “way” and persist in the process that it requires of us.

When we stay true to our own way, we will not be distracted by what others are doing. Comparing ourselves to others is a sure guideline for losing “our way” as we stumble to walk in someone else’s footsteps.

  14. Hi Lesly,

Something that made me think very seriously about comparing myself to other people in network marketing was when someone pointed out to me that “Every distributor starts out with the same marketing plan and resources” as each other. Some will make it work, others will fail and complain.

What worked for me was taking a realistic look at what time and money I could devote to a part-time business and joining one that fit into what matched that, instead of repeating my previous mistakes by over-stretching myself.

I must confess I’m very brutal to myself and tell myself things about me that I’d never say to my worst enemy! Trying not to do it, since I realised it’s not nice ๐Ÿ™
