The Art Of Self Branding

The art of self branding is a challenge for new people starting online with their business.

When I created my very first website some years ago, there were no social media platforms. Just static websites.

As “web 2.0” began (social media) to appear, and blogs started to get popular,  there wasn’t really an emphasis on “self-branding”. In fact not many companies, like they are now, were using it. Most advertising was done through printed newspapers, Yellow Pages, and direct mail – that was it.

Things have certainly changed, right? But some have stayed the same. You still have to, online or off …

  • generate interest in your business
  • get customers
  • have a USP (Unique selling point)

The same is true now more than ever with blogging!

So the number of blogs on the internet today is huge, close to 6 million I think. But if you’re starting out online, or not, most  everyone starts by “slapping” up a blog, put banners on it, ADs, etc., and think people are just going to show up. Wrong. They won’t.

So like any offline business, you have to generate interest, have a tag line, and be memorable.

How do you stand out when there’s something like6.7MM people publish blogs on blogging websites, and another 12MM write blogs using their social networks.

Let me share my journey of how I came to be “The Artistic Affiliate”. Think about how it can apply to you finding your “Self Brand”…

Like most people starting out I did what everyone else did – write about SEO, networking, Internet Marketing, and so on. This was so boring to me and so difficult to write about something I really knew nothing of.

#1 – Avoid doing what everyone else is doing or writing about

I started to explore MY personal interests, and there were many – health, medical transcription, art, childbirth education, meditation, video creation, networking, and before I knew it I had 4 – 5 individual blogs to maintain. Too many! When you explore your true, personal interests THIS is HOW you can stand out. Simply because you are already, different and unique. You just have to tap into it and accept it. You’re not supposed to be like anyone else.

#2 Explore YOUR personal interests

A common thread started to reveal itself and that was the drawings I kept doing for my blogs. I have a long standing interest in the arts and this became my focus for a blog. But how do I connect all the other interests I have? Some I could leave out (Like health, childbirth education…) but the creative side of me was so, so strong …

#3 Pay attention to that interest that keeps coming back to you

I then had to ask the question: How does art relate to network marking, Internet marketing, marketing in general, and how can I apply it to Affiliate Marketing? We all “market” online or off. We all need to tell people what we do, and how you choose to do it is called “Marketing” – no matter what business or service you have.

#4 Ask the question: How does my interest connect with marketing?

The answer to the “HOW” will help you determine your “Self Brand”. For me, art, creativity, and innovation is important to discuss and share with you. Because you ARE creative! You may not think so, but you are. Any idea that comes to you – is creative! And it’s my mission now to write about this, to enlighten you, to help you find you Self Brand and stand out from the crowd.

I also research the topic so I become more knowledgeable about being and igniting creativity in blogging, building websites, marketing … it’s all related. It’s connecting the dots, it’s discovering that thing about you that already makes you unique.

#5 Research and learn more about your favorite interest and write about it. This is how you become the go – to person for that topic

5 strong points to think about. Get pen and pare and start exploring what REALLY gets you fired up. Write it down. A starting point might be to ask yourself “What’s my dream, that which I wish to accomplish or do in my life”… see where it leads you… then get back to me. I want to know what you came up with… Comment below …

  3. Hey Chery ..
Wonderful to see you visiting … thank you … it’s heartwarming to me to know you got so much out of this post … blogging is always morphing into something else because it reflects you and what you’re up to at the time … as you change, your interests change, so will the blog because it reflects where you are. I think as long as the underlying theme is there and it connects with your marketing strategies it will all come together … YOU ROCK!

  4. Hi Deborah,
Always great to see you visiting… blogging certainly is a never ending process, but having clarity on exactly how you want to present yourself, teach others through your blog, the content comes more easily. It’s getting it clear in your mind then, I think it’s a smoother ride. I think we are always where we need to be at any given time in our lives… it’s accepting that and “starting” from where we are … it’s all good … love you much <3

  5. Hello Lesly, What an Amazing Amazing article, I absolutely loved it, I wrote down all of your questions and will journal about them later tonight I do agree they are all strong points to ponder on. Yikes Sometime I think I have this all down then I read a post like this and I feel as though I need to rethink it all again.

  6. What a great post Lesly! I too enjoy visiting blogs that are interesting, filled with passion, and learning new things. I really feel your new blog template is both creative and interesting — it suits you well!

I think for me, Question #4 was timely. This is exactly where I’m at! <3 It's like you read my mind. I just keep reminding myself that like most things in life, blogging too is a journey. I won't get everything accomplished in a day or two. It will be one step at a time and will most likely never end. That's okay. As long as I help many others along the way, I'll be successful and happy.

    Keep inspiring us all!

  7. Hi Erica,
I love reading about the diversity of interests people have. You have gone through a lot of changes too and great to see you focusing in on what really gets you excited! That passion will show through and readers of your blog will feel the passion. And, marrying what you do with marketing is a natural progression. You have to market online, or off, no matter what your business is . But marketing something you’re passionate about makes the difference.. wonderful to hear what you’re doing .. much love to you..

  8. Hi Erika..

Learning is a never ending process and I am right here with you doing the same my friend .. much love to you and thank you again …

  10. Hi Donna,
I remember your early days online, when we first met a few years ago … you point out something interesting, and that is the natural progression of following your intuition. “Well, I guess it found me …” is all part of self branding. I think it does fall into place. feels natural, and after trying different things you find yourself branding yourself naturally online. I feel this way with “The Artistic Affiliate”.. it “plopped” in my lap and I went with it ….

  11. Hi Lesly,

When it comes to branding, I had a terrible time at the beginning. I had too many interests and I had to sit myself down and figure out what I was most passionate about plus, what people wanted to know. As a gal of many passions, I found myself answering questions all about blogging, so it pulled me in that direction.

So, am I the queen of blogging? Meh….But the good thing is that in this niche it does encompass marketing which is another passion of mine. So blending the two, I became like the mad scientist in a cave. I write my blogs, do social media and create products. Yep…a lot of hard work, determination and frustration at times, but I found my brand and I’m running with it. Well I guess it found me!

  12. Hey there my friend! I just had to come over and check out your latest blog post as I really felt I needed too 🙂

Your post made me realize something as well, that I am exactly where I need to be right now learning from mentors like you who know about those things that I so want to learn more about and become the best that I can be at it!

    You are awesome Lesly 🙂

  13. Hi Lesly ,
I am very happy for you that you could bring all you are and like together.
It is really beautiful to see when people can bring the passion and business
together ,Like Erica said ,it takes time and is a way to finally find out .
I think I am on my way as well ,I know what I am passionate about ,for
me is only that I need more words to express .
It is really very good to see in our PAC group ,some people
do really what they like and are good in .it is getting more and more
    a special community 🙂
Thank you for this nice post 🙂

  14. Lesly,

Wonderful post. So true. We are all unique and we attempt to be like everybody else or at least like the people we think are successful. But their background, training and life experiences are completely different. We have to acknowledge what we know, what peaks our interest, what stirs up passion and what we can offer to others that they want and desire and need.

Just like you, I have created several web sites. It began with, a site to begin the safe exploration into your sexuality. But it wasn’t broad enough because my counseling includes the whole person. So the next site, was all about general therapy. And then I wanted to create a quiz and a blog so the quiz site and and blog were created. At that time I was told that the url was not good for getting traffic, but it encompassed the 2 areas that still, to this day, bring me the most excitement and joy to study about, learn about and share with others. Then I created because I am a baby boomer, but focusing on boomers and aging is NOT my passion. Next I created my web site specifically for bringing all my previous speaking events, products, books and services into one locale. And then I realized that I have studied all about marketing and social media and how to navigate this online world and most therapists are not putting their work out there in a big enough way. So — was created.

Finally I am able to truly focus on my 2 areas of passion, creating healing and love as well as helping others to market their practices so that they can reach those people who really need their help.

  15. Hi Sherman,
What a nice surprise to see you siting! Thank you 🙂 Absolutely, you can only be passionate about something you like… if you’re investing time and energy on something you care less about.. it will be communicated to visitors … have a great week too!

  16. Heu Lesly,

Great points. You definitely want to connect the dots of finding what’s of interest to you and bridge it with whatever business model you using. With that said the excitement and passion you have with your site will transfer over to your visitors. When you do this you stand a better chance of not only getting followers but also sales.

Great share Lesly! Have a great week!

  17. BG Jenkins says:

Oh my, Lesly… I love your iimage above. Something I wish I had a gift for. I’m wanting to get away from writing completely about business things… I’m just not as interested, though I do know you have to have some of it for marketing. I like this idea and am trying to get my vision to fruition. Great post.

  18. Great post on branding. I am exploring my personal interests and
and doing research on the topics that interest me, I became more knowledgeable about being creative in blogging,, building websites, and marketing for small business owners…,I have discovered that one thing about me that makes me unique. I
am a small business owner offline, and a marketer online. Helping small businesses connect to the net. I really like the Artisitic Affiliate tag line.and the video is so elegant. Very nice.

  19. Great points to ponder over. I am going to get my pen and paper out and see what I come up with !! Thanks for sharing.
